This job administers a variety of diagnostic audiological exams; counsels patients, families and physicians regarding test results, and reviews options that best meet their hearing healthcare needs. Performs audiological services in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hearing and balance disorders for people of all ages. Evaluates, orders, and dispenses hearing aids and cochlear implants.

Education

Required – Master’s degree in Audiology, or a Doctor of Audiology Doctorate (Au.D.) in state of practice.

Work Experience

Required – 1 year of experience in the audiology field.

Certifications

Required – Current hearing aid license in state of practice.

Preferred – Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology, CCC-A from American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care processes.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively collaborate and interact with patients and other healthcare professionals.

  • Clinical skills indicative of a Board-certified audiologist.

  • Ability to identify, test, diagnose and manage hearing disorders in all populations.

  • Ability to effectively counsel patients regarding hearing healthcare and possible treatment/management options.

  • Ability to perform Auditory Brainstem Response testing, Vestibular assessments, otoscopies and make ear impressions.

  • Working knowledge of hearing loss prevention methods to educate the public properly.

  • Ability to organize time and prioritize numerous duties within strict deadlines.

  • Ability to handle patients in a caring and respectful manner and plan accordingly for medically complex patients.

Job Duties

  • Assesses auditory function in normal hearing and hearing-impaired patients of all ages.

  • Communicates educational, medical, and diagnostic procedural information to the patient and/or patient’s family in a clear and concise manner.

  • Conducts comprehensive diagnostic audiological evaluations, newborn hearing screenings and otoacoustic emissions.

  • Assesses candidacy of patients with hearing loss for hearing aids and implantable devices and provides appropriate rehabilitation options to ensure the best possible outcome.

  • Facilitates departmental practice by scheduling and coordinating all appointment types.

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new employees as assigned and attends appropriate in-services/education programs.

  • Fits and calibrates hearing aids for patients and conduct auditory brainstem response evaluations as needed.

  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

  • Performs other related duties as required.
