This job assumes responsibility for strategic planning, direction and overall accountability for the Internal Communications department, independently makes decisions that could seriously affect the overall division and/or Ochsner Health System’s financial objectives, performance objectives and strategic results. Works with the AVP, Communications and Public Relations to develop budget for the department and is accountable for tracking expenses as incurred and assumes responsibility for strategic planning and direction of all internal communications for all Ochsner Health System regions and entities, and related ventures, affiliations and partnerships to drive the system strategy to motivate and engage more than 14,000 Ochsner Health System employees and more than 2,500 affiliated physicians through the delivery and measurement of consistent messaging across multiple platforms and tactics; directs all aspects of internal communication including proactive, reactive and crisis communications for the system; and directs or supervises internal communications team to achieve communications goals and targets.

Education 

Required – Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Journalism or related field

Work Experience

Required – 10 years corporate communications or business communications experience including 3 years in a management role.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Good organizational, time management, interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Professional attitude and skills to relate to executive management, professionals and business and community leaders.
  • Exhibits excellent leadership and self-direction, good judgment in handling difficult situations.
  • Must have computer skills and be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to the role.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.

Job Duties

  • Develops integrated internal communications strategies for the system, key operating divisions, regions, service lines, ancillary services and related ventures. 
  • Directs or supervises internal communications staff to set and achieve goals and targets in a timely manner to support the operating goals of the organization through communication of key operational initiatives and internal messages.  
  • Owns and continually assesses the current communications channels (Ochweb, Ochsner This Week, Power of ONE, Power of THE PRACTICE, Ochsner, the MINe platform, system-wide emails) and advises stakeholders on the most effective avenues for communication with particular audiences.
  • Interfaces regularly with executive team to develop communications strategies to support a knowledgeable and engaged workforce using a variety of channels, platforms and technologies – including the support of system events.
  • Maintains fiscally sound operations and measurable results including management of the internal communications budget, as well as ongoing analysis of department operating and performance statistics.
  • Other related duties as required.

Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.   (Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. Even though the weight lifted may be only a negligible amount, a job should be rated Light Work: (1) when it requires walking or standing to a significant degree; or (2) when it requires sitting most of the time but entails pushing and/or pulling of arm or leg controls; and/or (3) when the job requires working at a production rate pace entailing the constant pushing and/or pulling of materials even though the weight of those materials is negligible. NOTE: The constant stress and strain of maintaining a production rate pace, especially in an industrial setting, can be and is physically demanding of a worker even though the amount of force exerted is negligible. Mechanical lifting devices (carts, dollies, etc.) or team lifts should be utilized.

Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.
Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time.
Must be able to stand up to two or more hours at a time.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability).

Normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid or tissue, but exposure or potential for exposure may occur.

The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms.  The incumbent has an occupational risk for exposure to all communicable diseases.
