This job provides individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. Assists in the implementation of the delivery of health care services. Assists fellow employees in providing the highest quality personalized patient care and maintains a positive work relationship with the health care team. Demonstrates the ability to provide care and service with individuals of all assigned age groups
Education
Required – High School diploma or equivalent
Preferred – Bachelor’s degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology
Work Experience
Required – 3 years experience or Associate’s degree in Ophthalmic Assisting.
Experience with ophthalmology examinations in a high patient volume department.
Certifications
Required – Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association
Preferred – Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) through JCAHPO
Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)
- Must have computer and/or mainframe terminal and multi-line telephone skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of information.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
- Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, various software packages specific to role and keyboard.
- Good interpersonal skills.
- Ability to and experience working with and maintaining confidential information.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Experience in transcribing all information accurately, neatly and clearly.
- Skill working to prescribed clinic and ophthalmic standards.
- Ability to use equipment, perform tests and read results, as needed, including: visual acuity, extra ocular motility, pupil evaluation, confrontational fields, color vision, stereo vision, tonopen/applanation tonometry, lensometry, keratometry, eye irrigation, refractometry, manual a-scan measurements, topography, brightness acuity testing, and slit lamp examination.
- Ability to assist with removal and insertion of contact lenses.
Job Duties
- Enables clinic operations by effectively managing the patient flow in and out of exam rooms.
- Retrieves and collates patient information for provider.
- Cleans stocks and maintains exam rooms, procedure rooms, instruments and equipment and prepares patient for provider exam.
- Obtains near and distant visual acuity, amsler grid, worth 4dot, color vision, stereo vision, and basil tear secretion tests.
- Pulls patient’s contact lens records for optometrist review.
- Cleans, disinfects and packs instruments for autoclaving.
- Documents per department guidelines, pertinent patient information in medical record (including, but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, brief history, patient instructions, communication of test results, etc).
- Ensures future appointments have been scheduled or communicated and referrals/pre-authorizations have been initiated and obtained.
- Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
- Other related duties as required.

Physical and Environmental Demands
The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following: Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force.
