This job is responsible for performing the Humphrey Visual Field test as well as other types of visual testing available in department. Additionally responsible for providing individualized, direct patient care to assigned patients under supervision of the coordinator or physician. This job will assist the patient and family in restoration and maintenance of ophthalmic health care goals meeting JCAHO requirements and organizational goals and works closely with the coordinator in the implementation of policies, procedures and goals of the clinic.

Education

Required – High school diploma or equivalent.

Work Experience

Required –

Preferred - One year job related or medical environment experience.

Certifications

Required  - CPR Certification as required by clinic policy.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of required patient information.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout required job processes.
  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications, keyboard, and various software packages specific to role.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and a high standard of performance.
  • Ability to accurately obtain and transcribe patient related information in a neat and clear manner.
  • Strong decision making skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and be flexible to a changing and high volume department.
  • Ability to physically assist disabled patients from wheelchairs to exam chairs; must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time for patient care activities.

Job Duties

  • Perform all types of visual fields/ancillary test. Assist patients and physicians to ensure good operational flow. Thoroughly explain test being performed and answer all patient questions regarding the testing procedure.
  • Ensure test being performed has a corresponding order from the physician requesting the test. Ensure an encounter progress note is entered and signed before closing the patient encounter.
  • Ensure all equipment and instruments are cleaned, disinfected and maintained in accordance with OSHA, infection control and departmental standards.  
  • Check Symphony Web after each patient to ensure test have imported properly. Transfer external digital photos from digital camera into Symphony Web weekly.
  • Ensure timely patient service by covering in photography when no visual fields are scheduled.  
  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.
  • Other duties as assigned

The physical essential functions of this job include (but are not limited to) the following:  Frequently exerting 10 to 20 pounds of force to move objects; occasionally exerting up to 100 pounds of force.
