A surgical technologist works behind the scenes to support the success of every surgical procedure. As an essential member of the operating room team, surgical technologists help protect patient safety and ensure seamless care from start to finish.
Surgical technologists, sometimes referred to as surgical techs or surg techs, work alongside surgeons, nurses and other healthcare professionals throughout surgical procedures. Surgical technologists assist in the following:
1. Preparing the Operating Room
Surgical technologists are responsible for setting up the operating room. They gather, check, and open supplies on the sterile field for surgical procedures.
2. Assisting the Surgical Team
Surgical technologists start and maintain a sterile field until the surgical procedure is safely completed. They anticipate the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies safely while assisting him or her. This role requires quick thinking and the ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
4. Assisting with Patient Care
Surgical technologists support patients before, during and after surgery. They help by safely positioning the patient on the operating room table and assist when the patient is waking up for surgery. Occasionally, surgical techs may transport patients to and from the operating room.
5. Post-Operative Duties
After surgery, surgical technologists break down the sterile field. Surgical instruments are pre-cleaned then brought over to decontamination for cleaning and sterilization. The surgical tech and nurse are instrumental in stocking the operating room and preparing it for the next case.
What education and training do I need to become a surgical technologist?
Individuals typically complete a formal education program from accredited surgical technology program or a two-year associate degree. During their training, they learn about anatomy, surgical procedures, sterile techniques and how to use surgical instruments and equipment. Graduates are often required to pass a certification exam to become certified surgical technologists (CSTs).
