Where Innovation Meets Impact:

Why Physicians Choose Hematology & Oncology at Ochsner

By: Daniel Karel, DO, Jonathan Mizrahi, MD and Caitlin Taylor, MD

Location: Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center

Choosing where to practice hematology and oncology is a defining moment in any physician’s career. At the Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center, providers discover a rare blend of academic rigor, clinical excellence and genuine human connection.

Physicians aren’t just joining a cancer program. They’re joining a supportive ecosystem designed to help them grow, collaborate and deliver the highest level of care to the patients who trust them most.

Ochsner offers physicians the ability to evolve throughout their careers, not lock into one path. Whether physicians want to focus on clinical practice, research, education or a balance of all three, the system is structured to support that growth.

Dr. Jonathan Mizrahi, Section Head of Medical Oncology, highlighted that this blend of academic opportunity paired with robust clinical practice creates a dynamic and fulfilling environment for oncologists at every stage:

“It’s the perfect blend between whether you're looking for that academic or clinical job and combining the best attributes of both,” Dr. Mizrahi said. “If you want to do heavy on clinical practice, you can do that. If you want to do more on an academic side, you can do that. You can even change back and forth during your career.”

With advanced diagnostics, a robust clinical research portfolio, subspecialty access and supportive care teams, Ochsner equips physicians with everything needed to treat patients with confidence and compassion.

A Culture of Trust That Strengthens Care

While tools and technology are essential, the heart of the cancer program lies in its people. Physicians frequently describe an environment built on trust, respect and shared commitment.

Dr. Daniel Karel, Malignant Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplant, offered simple but powerful advice:

“The most important lesson I think I've learned through this job so far is to trust your colleagues,” Dr. Karel shared. “The group we work with here is an amazing group of people who are incredibly good at their jobs. Relying on them, trusting them, is just something that you absolutely should do.”

That trust fuels better communication, stronger collaboration and ultimately, better outcomes for patients.

Support for Early-Career Physicians

Every physician remembers those early days after training, when confidence is still developing and every decision feels monumental. Ochsner fosters an environment where asking questions is not only accepted — it’s encouraged.

Dr. Caitlin Taylor, Breast Medical Oncology, emphasized the importance of curiosity and connection:

“Don't be afraid to ask questions,” Dr. Taylor said. “Anyone coming right out of training, you're going to have questions. That's very normal. We all ask questions. Medicine is far more fun as a team sport, and your colleagues are here to support you. Never be afraid to ask.”

Her advice underscores a key truth about Ochsner: physicians here learn together. Whether you’re newly trained or decades into your career, you’re supported by colleagues who want to see you succeed.
