Two Paths, One Purpose

Why Occupational Therapists Thrive at Ochsner

By: Elizabeth F. and Victoria T., Occupational Therapists

Location: Ochsner Baptist and Ochsner Children's Hospital

Every April, we celebrate National Occupational Therapy Month, a moment to recognize the creativity, compassion and life‑changing work OTs bring to patients every day. At Ochsner Health, that impact is visible across our system, from pediatric therapy gyms filled with play to specialized clinics helping adults regain independence.

If you’re exploring a career in occupational therapy  or looking for the right place to grow, the stories of two Ochsner clinicians offer a clear message: this is a field where you can make a profound difference, and Ochsner is a place where your passion is supported, celebrated and developed.

Meet Victoria T., Pediatric Occupational Therapist at Ochsner Children’s Hospital, and Elizabeth F., Certified Hand Therapist at Ochsner Baptist — two therapists with very different specialties but one shared purpose: helping people reclaim meaningful lives.

Finding Their Calling in Occupational Therapy

Victoria didn’t always plan to become an OT. She discovered the field in college while shadowing a pediatric therapist. “Occupational therapy is such a unique career that focuses on helping people live a meaningful and functional life,” she says. Seeing children build skills through play showed her how powerful OT could be.

Elizabeth’s introduction came earlier as a patient recovering from sports injuries in high school. “The therapists created such a positive, encouraging space,” she recalls. As she learned more about OT, she fell in love with its individualized approach and the way it helps people return to what matters most.

Their stories reflect what draws so many people to OT: the chance to help others reclaim independence, joy, and meaning.

Two Specialties, One Shared Impact

Pediatrics at Ochsner Children’s Hospital

Victoria’s work is rooted in creativity and connection. “Every child is different,” she says. “What makes this work special is being able to meet kids where they are and turn therapy into a fun, creative and meaningful environment.” No two sessions look the same — and that’s exactly what she loves.

Hand Therapy at Ochsner Baptist

Elizabeth works with patients whose hand injuries affect nearly every part of daily life. “We often meet patients at a really vulnerable point,” she explains. Helping them rebuild strength, confidence and independence is what makes her work so meaningful.

Whether you’re drawn to pediatrics or adult rehabilitation, Ochsner offers opportunities to specialize, grow and make a tangible difference.

A Team That Lifts You Up

Both therapists describe their teams as collaborative, supportive, and full of people who genuinely care.

Victoria says, “Our team is incredibly collaborative, passionate and fun.” Elizabeth adds, “Everyone brings a different perspective, and that collaboration makes our patient care even stronger.”

At Ochsner, you’re never working alone. You’re part of a community that shares ideas, celebrates wins and supports one another.

Career Growth That’s Built In

Ochsner invests deeply in its therapists, offering mentorship, continuing education and opportunities to lead.

Victoria has grown through mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration and leadership roles, including serving on the pediatric rehab documentation team.

Elizabeth began her career at Ochsner through the Hand Therapy Fellowship Program. “That year of mentorship was invaluable,” she says. It helped her earn her hand therapy certification, a major milestone in her career.

Wherever you are in your OT journey, Ochsner provides the structure and support to help you advance.

Both therapists see their future at Ochsner as a chance to deepen their expertise and support the next generation.

Victoria hopes to pursue additional pediatric certifications and take on more mentorship opportunities. Elizabeth wants to continue growing in hand therapy while helping new clinicians find their footing — just as she once did.
