A rehab hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the medical care of patients undergoing rehabilitation in an inpatient rehabilitation facility (IRF) or hospital setting. Their role is critical in ensuring that patients with complex medical needs can safely and effectively participate in rehabilitation therapies aimed at restoring function and independence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Medical Management: Oversee and manage patients’ medical conditions, including chronic illnesses, acute medical issues, and complications that may arise during rehabilitation.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with physiatrists (rehabilitation doctors), physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners and case managers to create and implement individualized care plans.
  • Monitoring & Safety: Continuously monitor patients’ progress and stability to ensure they are medically able to participate in therapy.
  • Coordination of Care: Coordinate with specialists and primary care providers to ensure continuity of care during and after the rehab stay.
  • Education: Educate patients and families about diagnoses, treatments, medications, and discharge planning, often helping to arrange follow-up care.

Common Patient Populations:

  • Stroke survivors
  • Patients recovering from orthopedic surgery (e.g., joint replacements, fractures)
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) patients
  • Individuals with severe deconditioning from prolonged hospitalization or illness

Distinguishing Features:

Unlike acute care hospitalists, who manage patients in a general hospital setting, rehab hospitalists focus on patients who are medically stable but require intensive therapy to recover physical function. Their goal is not just to treat illness, but to support recovery and maximize functional independence.
