The Principal Storage & Disaster Recovery Engineer serves as the technical authority for enterprise storage, data protection, and disaster recovery architecture across Hybrid Cloud, Edge, and datacenter environments. This role is accountable for the design, implementation, and optimization of storage platforms that support mission critical clinical systems, enterprise workloads, analytics platforms, and emerging AI data pipelines.Operating across AWS, Azure, Rackspace hosted datacenters, and Edge deployments within hospitals and clinics, this role ensures storage and recovery solutions are highly available, scalable, secure, and cost optimized, while meeting healthcare regulatory and operational requirements.
The role partners closely with Cloud Architecture, Infrastructure Engineering, Data & AI teams, Security, and vendors to define standards, lead complex initiatives, and continuously evolve Ochsner’s storage and disaster recovery capabilities
The Principal Storage & Disaster Recovery Engineer leads the architecture, engineering, and lifecycle management of enterprise storage and data protection solutions across Hybrid Cloud and on‑premises environments. The role provides deep technical leadership in building resilient, scalable, and cost‑effective storage and recovery platforms supporting clinical systems, data platforms, and AI‑adjacent workloads.
This position spans AWS and Azure cloud storage services, Dell and NetApp enterprise storage platforms, object storage systems, Nutanix environments, and Rackspace datacenter infrastructure. The Principal Engineer defines storage and DR strategy, leads complex implementations, establishes design standards, and ensures alignment with enterprise architecture, security, compliance, and operational best practices.
Education
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
or - Equivalent combination of education and extensive hands‑on experience
Preferred
- Master’s degree in a related technical discipline
Work Experience
Required
- 10+ years of experience in storage engineering, infrastructure engineering, or related disciplines
- 5+ years designing and implementing enterprise‑scale storage and data protection solutions
- Demonstrated experience operating across multi‑cloud and on‑premises environments
Preferred
- Experience in healthcare or other highly regulated industries
- Experience supporting Epic, imaging platforms, or large‑scale clinical data systems
- Experience leading hybrid‑cloud transformations and data migrations
Certifications (Preferred)
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or Storage/Data Specialty
- Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- NetApp Certified Data Administrator
- Dell Technologies (EMC) Proven Professional certifications
- Nutanix Certified Professional or Advanced certifications
- Backup, disaster recovery, or data management certifications (e.g., Cohesity)
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Deep expertise in enterprise storage platforms, including NetApp and Dell (e.g., Isilon, PowerFlex)
- Strong knowledge of AWS storage services (S3, EBS, EFS, FSx)
- Strong knowledge of Azure storage services (Blob Storage, Azure Files, Managed Disks, Data Lake)
- Experience designing and operating object storage solutions across cloud and on‑premises environments
- Strong understanding of hybrid storage architectures spanning cloud, edge, and datacenter
- Expertise in backup, replication, and disaster recovery architectures; Cohesity experience strongly preferred
- Advanced skills in performance tuning, capacity planning, and cost optimization
- Familiarity with data architecture concepts, lifecycle management, tiering, and archival strategies
- Awareness of AI and analytics data structures, including large‑scale ingestion, retention, and access patterns
- Strong understanding of encryption, security, and healthcare compliance requirements
- Proven ability to design highly available, resilient, and recoverable storage solutions
- Exceptional troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills
- Ability to lead technical design discussions and influence enterprise architecture decisions
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including executive‑level communication
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the enterprise authority for storage and disaster recovery architecture
- Define, standardize, and evolve storage and DR designs across AWS, Azure, Edge, and Rackspace environments
- Design and implement scalable, resilient, and cost‑optimized storage solutions for clinical and enterprise workloads
- Architect and govern backup, replication, and disaster recovery strategies across hybrid environments
- Lead storage and recovery architecture for major initiatives, including Epic migration, cloud adoption, and infrastructure transformation
- Design storage patterns supporting analytics, data platforms, and AI‑adjacent workloads
- Establish enterprise standards, reference architectures, and best practices
- Lead integration and lifecycle management of NetApp, Dell, Nutanix, and object storage platforms
- Optimize performance, cost, and capacity across all environments
- Partner with Cloud, Infrastructure, Security, and Data teams to ensure end‑to‑end alignment
- Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and escalation support to engineering teams
- Reduce dependency on external vendors through internal capability development
- Support data migration, validation, and cutover planning
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulatory and data protection standards
